That person will learn that they can get away with it and will start to do so with other trans people, moving the bar on what they think "deserves" dehumanization to wherever is convenient.
Those watching will learn that it is acceptable to misgender people.
No. I don't care if you are marginalized. I don't care if you yourself are trans. Don't. do. it.

@hrefna People who excuse this kind of behavior by trying to make their marginalization out to be uniquely horrible and immunizing against criticism are the worst.
-
If you allow this to happen in your circles, you are part of the problem.
If you support people "except that" and just allow it to pass silently, you are part of the problem.
You don't have to excise them into the sun, not at all, but you can at least take a stand and say "hey mate that's frak'd up."
-
@Kye and you know, maybe it is uniquely horrible. That doesn't justify lateral violence and dehumanization against other marginalized groups. Even if someone is more or less marginalized, for whatever meaning we want to ascribe there.
I'm not playing oppression top trumps.
-
@hrefna it really is crazy how few people realize the impact just saying "hey that's not okay" has. Just the act of going "no" and showing everyone present that it's not alright sends a very important message, just like how, as you said, not saying anything sends a very clear message as well

@ezra This sounds like something to work out with someone other than strangers on mastodon who 1) have character limits to deal with and 2) who were talking about something very specific that you were not evidently involved in.
I'm sorry that this happened to you, don't take it out on me or collapse the context of what I was discussing.
