I’m no prepper, but if I’ve learned anything from watching too many repair videos on YouTube it’s that our modern lifestyle is time-limited by capacitors, batteries, and various polymers that breakdown.

After the apocalypse the one who controls the supply of these things will be rich.

@linux_mclinuxface What do you need batteries for if society collapses?

@linux_mclinuxface I find it hard to suspend disbelief in those post-apocalyptic shows where they're drinking 30 year old cans of soda or beer, and eating canned vegetables of the same vintage... Let alone the issue with the gasoline.

@bouncing @linux_mclinuxface
I know several people who will be very interested in keeping their medical devices functional.
Communication, lighting, tools.
Societal collapse can take many forms and degrees of effect. And will likely not be distributed equally. And not everyone will be on-board with a fantasy of return to an idealized pre-industrial, agrarian, hunter/gatherer existence, especially if that means they and many people they know have to just give up.
But... all this spoils the fun -
@xinit oh yeah. The reality of canned products are not as portrayed. Maybe 5 years it would be fine. There are lots of channels on YouTube of folks “sampling” old canned foods. It doesn’t go well.

@linux_mclinuxface @bouncing in my ham-handed electronics work (well below amateur, but above smashing rocks together) I've decided that SMD components, while nice for making compact devices, have got to go.
Nearly un-maintainable. Needing to rework some older devices and replace caps or diodes, or anything... hole-through is so much easier for my bad eyes and poor dexterity to desolder and re-solder.
I have a device with a micro-usb power port that came off. Prob can't fix it. Barrel jack -

@linux_mclinuxface an episode from Malcolm In The Middle, I believe, where Hal happily eats a can of black olives that he found at the back of the cupboard.
Until he notices the label says it's a tin of peaches.
