This is a 32-bit MCA RAM card, one of the models that lets you use more than 16MB in a Model 80.
The need for an option ROM is obviated by an initializer program on the reference disk. Instead of a Track 0 initializer, it uploads the program to an SRAM on the card.
Unfortunately it only does that once because the funky socket the 6116 is in is a goddamn Dallas battery backup built into a DIP socket.

@foone it’s so you can use an off the shelf SRAM instead of a monolithic Dallas zero power RAM, but those existed when this card was made!

@luigithirty would it be possible to jam a flash chip in there? Maybe with an adapter board?
