After all of the infosec chatter about how you probably don't need a VPN, age verification has made PornHub block access in most Southern states and TickTock about to block US IPs.

After all of the infosec chatter about how you probably don't need a VPN, age verification has made PornHub block access in most Southern states and TickTock about to block US IPs. We are entering a new age of internet censorship and you might need a non-shady VPN.

@evacide I agree, but the VPN market really needs to adjust its stance from "we'll protect you from hackers" to "now you can access whatever you need."

I feel like a whole lot of folks in northern states are gonna be asked to host Raspberry Pis running Tailnet exit nodes on behalf of their friends in Southern states.

@evacide Agreed. The hard part for nearly everybody is going to be distinguishing the non-shady VPNs from the shady ones.

@jalefkowit @evacide
Proton's VPN seems like the obvious choice.
Am I missing something, though? -

@ohmu @evacide Knowing that requires you to have heard of Proton, which most people haven't. Several other VPNs advertise extremely heavily.
It's also difficult to cross-shop, because (as far as I know) there are no reliable third-party certifications that let a customer compare the practices of one VPN against another. There's no UL seal for VPNs that the average person can look at and know that this VPN at least meets minimal safety standards.
(I personally would trust Proton more than I would trust most vendors, but I live in this world and know their reputation. The average user doesn't.)

@DaveMWilburn @evacide We already are. A couple of ex-cow-orkers asked for access to mine in December.
