Nodebb v4 alpha issues

Ive set up an instance of v4 and enabled federation in the settings.

~~The world icon still doesnt show on left hand side (on Desktop)~~
(Update, I manually added world to menu now)

Ive tried making posts referencing other users but still no federation servers are showing in the list (under admin menu)
Im still confused on how I should reference other sites users and I tried a few combinations

Ive tried following myself on here but got 'API error'

it doesnt come up with the inline profile picture it used to do on here
But I note its not doing inline image here now either.

@eeeee if you want to reference a remote user you have to use their "handle", which is a combination of their userslug and domain, combined with the @ sign.

So @[email protected]

but in settings it still says Nodebb is aware of 0 servers

so a 'thought experiment'..
(short version: will changing the url of nodebb site mess up the federation)

Background, I had my test v4 site at a sub directory of mysite, and I wondered if that was causing the Federation not to work. So I bought a new domain and will move it over, see if that changes things.
But it got me wondering, if I change the domain, my nodebb fed addresses on that nodebb instances wont change over, and how can I make that happen?

Specifically if I was [email protected]/v4
how do I update those to be [email protected]

Not sure if Im pre-empting a problem that wont exist, but Im thinking unless I do a fresh install and setup at the new domain, wont the existing fed addresses still reference the old location?

@eeeee yes, you're correct in realizing that this is a problem.

There is currently no solution. I ran into the same issue when news.crag.social migrated to community.openbeta.io

I think a solution may be to issue Move activities for all users. I have yet to actually test this.

I will probably just do new install, but curious about the move option

@eeeee currently there is no facility in NodeBB that issues them. They are typically used in individual user migrations between servers.

(edit it worked, I just referenced myself on here and got notification)

It let me follow you, so it seems being on a subdirectory was the issue behind that error.
And good news, its aware of 1 server now

@eeeee when set up behind a subdirectory, webfinger needs to be set up at root level to redirect to the subdirectory.

That may be the issue.

ok, so I tried World, now it knows 1 server (via you)
but on World, it doesnt know of any other topics yet. Is that to be expected as it will fill up as new posts from associates of you come in?

I read the Discovering content section, but Im still no wiser on what I need to do to get World to have content.
Would following more 3rd party accounts help?

@eeeee you have to actually follow users in order to have content sent your way.

The decentralized nature of the fediverse is built in this way, where follow relationships dictate what you see, especially when starting out.
