@Ruth_Mottram I'm curious, does that paper include an inventory on how often this occurs (the clouds clearing, not the wind patterns themselves as they're there all the time and positioning of turbines is planned with that in mind)?
At my employer our technicians work a lot in offshore wind and only one technician has ever seen this strong an effect. The captain of the ship took some time to give everyone nice views from downwind.

edit: for the people "subtoothing" this as an example of how evil offshore wind energy is: you might want to check out the footprint of cooling water and fuel input thermal power stations (coal, nuclear etc) have.
