We’ve finally reached the next phase in gameplay abstraction!
Phase 1: Play a game
Phase 2: Watch someone play a game
Phase 3: Watch a computer play a game
Phase 4: Watch a computer simulate playing a game“New AI model can hallucinate a game of 1993’s Doom in real time”

@drahardja I mean, it hallucinates on demand, so you're not just watching it play - you're "prompting" the next frame by interacting with it like you would with normal Doom.
(this is why all the "human game developers are over" takes are out in force.)

@datarama Beyond a morbid curiosity and a desire to tinker, I don’t know why I would want any product that does this. The whole point of a game is to enjoy the output of a team of game-makers.

@drahardja I think one of the reasons I've largely gravitated towards primarily playing indie games is precisely that they feel so much more "human". The intentions and decisions of the people behind them shine through in a way that I don't see in big commercial titles.
Alas, judging from how people are responding to this on the orange site, Ars etc. ("it's gonna be great to eliminate the last few bits of craftsmanship left in our bleak tech landscape!"), I think you and I are in a minority.

@datarama I hold out hope that those comments are sarcastic.

@drahardja I mean, I upped the hyperbole, but that *is* the tech bro sentiment.
