i'm so sick to my stomach, i found out that someone is scraping / indexing posts from across fedi. i do not consent to this. can we get this shut down somehow???? https://mastodon.social/public

i mean look. i'm all for consent, but the threshold for outrage is dipping lower and lower and at this point we've gotten to being outraged over simply displaying posts. not even persisting them -- just *displaying* them.

if i was on one of those fancy misskey forks that allowed you to do $INSTANCE variable injection shenanigans, i would have made that the punchline. missed opportunity

@trwnh annoyingly the technology required to scrape fedi is technically, also the technology required to just federate in general, your fedi server “scrapes” posts all the time, the difference is entirely in how they get used, it isn’t really a technical problem, but rather a people/social boundaries one,

@Li yes this was the joke :3

@trwnh public posts are public, fediverse users outraged

anyway here are some mastodon issues i am linking to for no particular reason
- marking posts as "embeddable" https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/4883
- using "discoverable" on posts, not just profiles https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12178
also hm this w3c spec seems vaguely interesting https://www.w3.org/TR/odrl-model/
