Betsy Reed, editor of The Guardian US, speaks out about the craven refusal of both Los Angeles Times and Washington Post to endorse Kamala Harris in the election — that is, to reject fascism

"It is not hard to guess why Bezos and Soon-Shiong made these decisions. Both are billionaires whose other businesses could be hurt by people who conflate their papers’ editorials with the two men’s own opinions. And both are hedging against the chance of Donald Trump winning the election, since he will surely turn his vengeance on those who opposed him."

"This is a dark day in American journalism. Both papers [Los Angeles Times and Washington Post] have made clear their disdain and disrespect for Donald Trump and published numerous columns on their editorial pages calling him unfit to serve. The refusal of the Washington Post and LA Times to publish editorials endorsing Kamala Harris at this point is nothing but chickenshit."

“Both papers [#losangelestimes and #washingtonpost ] have made clear their disdain and disrespect for #DonaldTrump and published numerous columns on their editorial pages calling him unfit to serve.”
Has either masthead published an explanation or rational of the view that #KamalaHarris is not fit to server as #potus ?
After #election2024 either #harriswalz2024 or #trumpvance2024 will attain the offices of #president and #VicePresident .
I guess both mastheads will have to do #editorial or #opinion pieces from their owners as to why/how they are unable to decide between someone they believe is not fit to be President, and someone else who would appear to be acceptable to be President? Surely, it can’t be that hard a decision?
Or, perhaps better explain why they feel that neither the #republicans or #democrats have put forward #candidates who are capable, or acceptable to be #presidentoftheunitedstates .

@wdlindsy a single billionaire or small group of billionaires should not control anything! Nothing!

@wdlindsy
Yes but they have colluded for years/decades and there has been no democratic firewall to limit the reach of that collusion. -

@wdlindsy
Trump tariffs will blow a massive hole in global trade. The ripple effect could potentially be as massive as the 2008 GFC. That will affect nations' budgets, inflation and wages.Then there's the issue of Climate once Trump takes the brakes of FF industry and smashes climate controls. The money spent on mopping up ongoing natural disasters will be huge and allow for even less policy change and financial support for the ppl who need it.
Not that Trump Vance Bannon Musk Bezos et al well care one iota.

"Los Angeles Times editorial page editor Mariel Garza, along with journalists Robert Greene and Karin Klein, resigned from the paper after its decision not to endorse Harris, and nearly 2,000 readers canceled their subscriptions."

"The Washington Post, too, has seen about 2,000 subscribers bow out, and fourteen of the newspaper’s columnists called the decision not to condemn Trump’s threats to the 'freedom of the press and the values of the Constitution' 'a terrible mistake.' Cartoonist Ann Telnaes published a blacked-out square, playing on the Post’s motto that democracy dies in darkness."

"This is a rather monstrous abdication of responsibility in the face of the very real fascist threat that looms over us all—especially those of us who aren’t billionaires. It is yet another stark and troubling instance of the failures of our corporate media to do its job."

@wdlindsy Pope Francis recently called for Catholics to reject consumerism and individualism. But are those not key components of US economic and social systems long promoted by Liz Cheney and other Republicans? Maybe we have a more fundamental problem than irresponsibility by corporate media.
-
William Lindsey :toad:replied to Joseph Meyer last edited by
@JosephMeyer I'd say the irresponsibility of corporate media is rooted on economic matters. I also continue asking myself how Pope Francis and top Catholic leaders expect us to listen carefully to their teaching about ethical matters when they so blatantly deny principles of equality and justice by excluding women from ordination and all governing power in the church. Some of us have stopped listening due to that glaring disconnect.

@xs4me2 So it seems to me.
