What web technologies to use for a big site?

    Hi,

    What would be the best choice to build a huge website upon? Should I use a framework or build a completely custom platform?

    I'm planning to build a very complex learning management site where main functionalities would be: videos, audios, quizzes, chats, payments, messaging, users can interact with each other.

    One of the development companies I contacted said they would use WordPress for this, but I'm not so sure it's a good idea.

    The website will have a large user base (millions) very quickly and I expect it to be very busy. I'm not sure WordPress can handle such a big traffic and user activity.

    So what kind of technologies or framework would you recommend?

    WordPress itself can handle lots of traffic if scaled correctly. However, if you're looking to do lots of custom features that don't have WordPress plugins for and require custom work, then you're probably better off with a custom product.

    Oh... yes, that's true... they are hashed for privacy because if the database were leaked, some could argue that an IP address is considered PII.

    In that case then I don't think we store a list of recent IP addresses.

    LXC refers to the technology that enables programs to work in containers like Docker. I haven't tried it, but there are dockerized versions of NodeBB that are supposed to be easy to deploy. Because it's still kind of a new technology for deployment YMMV.

    Traditionally NodeBB is deployed as a process running on a VPS (which is commonly a VM dedicated to you (aka KVM)) since it already has all the daemonization logic built in. So, this is the best tested and most common method of deployment. You can get a VPS from providers like Digital Ocean, AWS, Azure, etc.

    Even if you don't have access to educator resources, there are typically ways to get free server time

    Sumblime Text 3 best I could find. The plugins makes it so worth it.
