unread count not updating

this has me stumped?
the web socket connection is ok, and everything else on the site works just fine. but I cant get the unread count to update unless I do a manual page refresh?

my forum is running the latest v1.11.0, with a Postgres database. Im using the Persona them, with a custom child theme. (maybe the issue is there somewhere?)

any pointers of where to look to debug would be great. its not a show stopper, more of an annoyance really
