Need help to set up a test site before migrating my forum to NodeBB
-
Though I visit here regularly, I am not good enough to do it myself. I did try using Heroku and no idea how it ended up. If someone can help me as admin for some time when I learn to do it myself or with guidance from forum, will be great.
@julian @psychobunny : I am posting through Maxthon browser. The issue still persists in FF.

I think it will probably be cheaper to set up a DigitalOcean account. For $5/month, you could get a basic server with enough resources to power your forum. Setting it up, then, is much easier. If you would opt to go that route, sign up with this link and we can begin helping you to get your server and forum rolling.

Thanks @planner
Just that I want to be sure that I can work with it before moving to a paid hosting. I have my own domain. I need sub boards to be listed which I do not see in any of the sample boards. So have to check if it will work for me, learn it and move to a production server. If anyone could volunteer, I will be grateful.

One thing you want to be sure is if it will be possible to migrate your existing forum to NodeBB without losing data. Care to share the link to your current forum.
You could set up a test forum in a virtual environment on your own computer, import you forum to it and use it as a test system,

Some time back @psychobunny posted these screen shots here : https://adminextra.com/threads/about-nodebb.6684/page-2#post-63960
I will be more than happy to have the first and second screen shot themes with a slightly smaller tiles.

The most important thing you want to verify first is whether there's an import script that will handle SMF and MyBB. There's been a discussion about an import script for a popular forum application, but I don't know how far it has progressed. See this discusssion.

Ok, I guess there is no importer. Is it possible I just convert techdoodle.in and use only database ?
@planner
I am also open to start techdoodle.in from scratch.

Since the members and posts stats on techdoodle.in is kinda low, starting from scratch might not be such a bad idea. In that case, you can get your new NodeBB-powered techdoodle.in up and running as soon as you are ready.
Btw, you just can convert it and use the same DB because they are not compatible.
You might want to ping the devs to see if they have plans for an importer.

@planner
It is ok. I was thinking of revamping the forums since some time. But I have never tried NodeBB. When I started a MyBB forum, I was able to try in on WAMP before taking it to production. Also, it a hobby forum to keep myself updated of tech niche. So I would prefer to go with a free server than paid until I make a decent amount of traffic.
