I'm not gonna lie I'm kind of sad bluesky is taking off the way it is. I'll still be on there because I have a professional obligation (and also because I can't afford to put all my eggs in one basket again,) but when people say it's "just like old Twitter" they're right
It's just that it turns out old Twitter was horrible for my mental health

@eniko This is the thing some people will never understand.
Platforms come and go, protocols are here to stay.

@Tijn @eniko So the atproto protocol that Bluesky is using is here to stay?
Just not to be too cheeky, I must also point out that the author of "Protocols, Not Platforms" is on the board and was a major inspiration behind atproto and Bluesky (unlike Dorsey who when he was on the board was merely there because of how Twitter found itself backing the initiative).
I get the overall resistance to BS and it's sometimes warranted since some of its key features take time to get implemented but I feel like folks on Mastodon are always a couple years late on what's going on here. I'm sure there are still people calling it Jack's platform right now.

@[email protected] @[email protected] To be too cheeky, people on fedi like to talk a big game about protocols but then the protocol never changes. never addresses major issues around safety and moderation. can't even clearly implement stuff like quote posts and emoji reactions. I don't say this to criticize you at all @[email protected], it just bothers me about this place as a whole. if the benefit of this place is a shared protocol shouldn't we be doing shared protocol design?

We are though

https://oisaur.com/@renchap/112299860209222424You can criticize the development pace that comes with managing several open technical standards and their multiple implementations on a budget of ≈0, but not that things aren't happening.
If "we" includes you (i.e. you want to get involved with something), let me know with what and I'll try to get you in touch with the right people.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Totally fair, and yes I have participated in a few FEP discussions on those sites. I was let down that progress stalled but they were still good conversations. The zero funding you mention is the biggest issue of course, we can't hold open source volunteer projects to the same standards as VC-backed projects.
what seems to bring progress here more than anything is one fedi software project implementing something and then others copying it. that's how quote posts were created in Misskey and Pleroma, I believe emoji reacts went the same way. but the open question around moderation and safety has languished, even though every couple weeks we have more reminders why it is critical. that's good that a Moderation, Trust & Safety Task Force has been established, maybe some changes will come from that -
@smitten @eniko @Tijn @cibo Yeah, I like that implementers can experiment with features, even if interoperability can suffer for some time as a result. See e.g. GoToSocial's new reply controls that are AFAIK based on a draft FEP formerly advanced by a Mastodon team member. If that works well, maybe it'll motivate others to implement them as well.
Did you hear that the SocialWG is ramping up again too? https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-swicg/2024Sep/0010.html Things are actually looking quite sunny for ActivityPub right now IMO.
