As Joyce Vance reminds us,

@wdlindsy He’s letting the militias know he’s practicing psyops.

@wdlindsy Why is instigating violence legal in the US? That is not the kind of country I want to live in.

@wdlindsy He added the Springfield attack at the instant he knew he was losing the debate. Distractions galore.

This attempt of damage limitation can't save Vance from being accused of inciting hatred in the worst manner imaginable. His lie is easily comparable with historic hate campaigns against Jews spreading rumours of them poisoning wells or murdering Christians to use their blood for religious rituals.
Pogroms against minorities have regularily been the outcomes of arousing aggressive emotions for political gains. In Germany the AfD is spreading hateful rumours against migrants and refugees with the effect that PoC aren't safe on the street anymore or their shelters are to be attacked by arsonists.
So hopefully this helps to weaken #Trump and #Vance so much that there won't be a worst case scenario of real fascism rearing its ugly head in the US.

@nanowiz Yes. Transfer all the sins of the social group onto a poor goat, whip it out to the wilderness to die, and you absolve the social group of all sin — or so you imagine.

@dhayannada Yes, I agree. I would hope this all helps to weaken Trump and Vance, but they're obviously going this ugly, dangerous route because it works with very many Americans.

William Lindsey :toad:replied to Runyan50 last edited by
@Runyan50 Yes — I also suspect that this was all strategized and he and his handlers knew he'd mount that attack in the debate. He had spent the day of the debate posting stupid memes about the Springfield story on social media.

William Lindsey :toad:replied to Runyan50 last edited by
@Runyan50 It's not the kind of country I want to live in, either. But violence has been part of the warp and woof of American culture from the moment the colonists set foot on North American shores and began exterminating the native peoples, then introducing slavery, a system of institutionalized violence that placed all people of color in a stigmatized position.

@SoGeneris Very well-stated. That seems exactly right.

@lachlan I certainly would hope anyone reading postings on social media would choose to read what they/she/he want to read. I'm not aware of any system coercing people to read things here against their will. Anyone who gives more than cursory glance at my own feed will quickly see that it's heavily oriented to commentary on American politics and culture. And I won't, of course, apologize for doing my bit to educate people globally about the dangers of ignoring what's happening in the US now.

@wdlindsy I wasn't being sarcastic - I am thankful that unlike so many of your fellow citizens, you used tagging appropriately. It makes it easy for me to filter to the times I'm prepared to see it.

@lachlan I knew you weren't being sarcastic. I took your comment at face value and thought I was replying in similar fashion. I'm not inclned — not ever — to coerce anyone to read anything at all. I see sites like Mastodon as boards laden with rich offerings from which each diner can choose as she/he wishes. And I appreciate the opportunity sites like this afford me to keep learning, even when learning forces me to encounter what is strange or distasteful to me. That's how growth happens.
