Decided to sign up for a SOCAN membership last Friday, completed the application & returned it. I had joined CAPAC in 1982 but it was disbanded when SOCAN was created in 1990 via the merger of CAPAC & PROCAN. As I’d dropped out of music completely I never really gave it a thought.
Well yesterday I was told I was already a SOCAN member & have spent the past day gaining online access. All my 1982 info is there. Now I just have to figure out how to use them instead of Distrokid going forward.

@GuitarSith I thought SOCAN is a PRO. Didn’t realize they do distribution as well.

They don’t do distribution, but they work with publishers to collect royalties on their members behalf. They work in partnership with ASCAP which is the US equivalent. Now I have to try and find a publisher who is also a member and willing to accept me. I also need to find out what happens to the album that I just published through Distrokid, if I can transfer it over. Maybe then Apple iTunes Store in Canada will allow its sale including the Tom Petty cover. -

@GuitarSith I knew the cover tune was part of your concern. And now I hear what you mean about their advocacy. I hope they can do some of the magic you need!

It’s trying to find a record label with a publisher that’s willing to sign someone with very limited financial prospects. Even giving up 50%, if there’s no money then 50% of nothing is nothing. -

@GuitarSith OMG, I hear you! After 30 years of making money with music, I still do the ️ whenever I think about how little I make (especially in royalties).
