@Seirdy @thisismissem @laurenshof @erlend I'm really not convinced there's a benefit to mastodon the network, mastodon users, mastodon admins, or mastodon the company to have native first party mobile apps.

@Seirdy @thisismissem @laurenshof @erlend I'm really not convinced there's a benefit to mastodon the network, mastodon users, mastodon admins, or mastodon the company to have native first party mobile apps. But assuming there is some benefit to being the native app stores, you can distribute a PWA instead. Given that the web app already exists, that seems like a *much* better use of resources

@jenniferplusplus @Seirdy @laurenshof @erlend PWAโs still do not receive the full benefits that a native app in the app stores do, that's just how things are, but the DMA is improving things.

@thisismissem @Seirdy @laurenshof @erlend Yes, there are trade offs. But the whole point of this conversation is that mastodon ggmbh is choosing the trade offs that seem directly opposed to the priorities of fedizens.

@jenniferplusplus @Seirdy @laurenshof @erlend I promise you that's not the case. This is literally them trying to save money so they can reinvest elsewhere, whilst also knowing that they need an official app in the app stores.

@jenniferplusplus @Seirdy @thisismissem @laurenshof @erlend I mostly agree with this take. I think core mastodon decision-makers are treating this as if it's a product company, and that's just not what this is. Fundamental misunderstanding of what the opportunity is here in my opinion.
FWIW, I care less about the actual decision to hire one iOS engineer. If that's the level of money they have to play around with, it's not all that meaningful in the wider scheme of things.

@polotek @jenniferplusplus @Seirdy @laurenshof @erlend an iOS engineer, most likely in Europe due to the CET overlap requirement, which means European salaries โ significantly less that American salaries.
But regardless, a full-time employee is almost always cheaper than two freelancers.

@thisismissem @jenniferplusplus @Seirdy @laurenshof @erlend sorry. I was saying something a bit different. I know some people disagree with me here. But the level of reach and impact mastodon has right now is far outstripped by this level of budget. I'm not saying it doesn't matter. I am saying it's not likely to impact anything I care about today. And that's based on my experience as a person who used to hire engineers and manage budgets.

I agree that investment in mobile app clients should be de-prioritized. The best ones are already considerably ahead of Mastodon's on the UX front and itโs not obvious that Mastodon can catch up, or needs to. I would prefer to see the UX investment go into admin/moderation tools. -
@timbray @thisismissem @jenniferplusplus @Seirdy @laurenshof @erlend I would be more excited if mastodon hired somebody who is not an engineer to help them understand all of the other shit they are having a hard time understanding.
