With Amazon's latest hijinx, remote vs onsite work seems to be a hot topic again. I have an anecdote.
Our previous office was affectionally known as "a shithole". Cramped, noisy, worn down, badly furnished, the list goes on. Most of us did our best to avoid being there. Calls to return in after the lockdowns were not well received.
Earlier this year we moved to a new location, yay. But there's a twist: when renovating the building, they actually asked the opinions of us workers on how to set things up. Open plan vs separate offices, needed furnishings, etc.
Result? A pleasant and functional space everyone enjoys working at. So much so that my boss (an oldschool anti-remote guy) is now going around asking if people could be offsite more, as we're running out of space with people happily coming in.
Lesson learned? Dunno. I guess this is communism and wouldn't fly at a late stage capitalist megacorp, where forced on-site labor at an open plan hellscape is the only option.
