Today Mastodon is taking another step towards its founding ideals: independence and non-profit ownership.

Well it is here on my feed, it's my Mastodon experience. Do You want to deny my experience? Do you suggest my brain is "not made" for Mastodon? Sorry, but this sounds like intense gatekeeping. I shared my experience, I get that it's not the experience of people who are happy here, but it's the experience of people who tried it here but moved to bsky. If Mastodon is not interested in those people, that's fine. Then ppl will go to bluesky.

@Mastodon
Please explain new Euro not-for-profit organization. Is this a trust that controls the mission?"We will continue day-to-day operations through the Mastodon GmbH for-profit entity, which will become wholly owned by the new European not-for-profit entity. The Mastodon GmbH entity automatically became a for-profit as a result of its charitable status being stripped away in Germany. The existing US-based non-profit entity, the 501(c)(3), will continue to function as a fundraising hub."

@DirkGutlin @elexia @Mastodon I'm not dismissing your experience at all. I just don't get it and I'd like to understand it as many of my friends won't join or stay active either. I asked for an image of the 'maze of text' you see.

@urbanfoxe
Well, I don't think I can capture it in one image. I think the weird thing is that my feed is usually overflowing with very few very active users, and I get EVERYTHING these few active users do, be it original posts or comments to comments to comments. I like more original posts and more diversity in the posts I see.In bsky, I have this neatly ordered due to feeds. If I want science, i get a science feed. If I want social, i check my friends feed. No suggestive algorithm. No chaos

@Mastodon 'My Paranoia'. One can easily follow what the Mar A Lago Criminal can and will do. And we've seen what the oligarchy did when faced with his actions. I want, very much, for Mastodon to succeed but too much freedom, despite its Management location in Europe, won't hold water if he decides to censor us in the U.S. I do hope that is a consideration that has been explored. Between AI and the right wing Media, even now, we face the hints of a 'People's Observer". Lies A Plenty!

@Mastodon how

@Mastodon superb leadership here going non-profit and transparent. We're planning something similar for @TeamTopologies ...

@Mastodon Prudent, Trump has 100 executive orders planned for his first day. Am fairly certain it does not support non profit anything.

"The people should own the town square"
Who could say it any better? Social media has to be a part of our public infrastructure or else it is just a tool of public manipulation and oppression.
It is antithetical for social media to be owned by a corporation.
-
@Mastodon You should also consider changing hosting providers, outside the United States.

@Mastodon This is great.
What I find amazing and very frustrating is that even when opinion journalists address these issues seriously and thoughtfully they almost always fail to mention Mastodon -- as here:
"We need to support the creation of other platforms that are designed not to amplify lies and hate, or to just suck our personal data and sell us things, but to promote a better conversation."
Elon Musk and the new world order: the hijacking of the global conversation
How can we publicly debate policy in the face of the rising – and polarising – influence of the X owner and others whose only aim is to serve themselves

@Mastodon whew! this is good. this is really, really good. had no idea Germany stripped y’all of the non-profit status and that’s why you had to incorporate in the US.
so this will ensure the USA has no jurisdiction over Mastodon the software company, the software, correct?
the only quibble would be the TLDs: .social and .online are controlled by USA providers. there’s still vulnerability to abuse of power with the TLDs being under USA jurisdiction.

@blogdiva @Mastodon The US non-profit has no relationship with the german structure, and never had. The stripping of the german non-profit status is coincidental and completely unrelated.
We try to use EU-based companies where we can, unfortunately it is very hard to do it for everything, domain names being a good example, and we consider this very low-risk (especially compared to other things like legal jurisdictions, or shareholder structure) -

@DirkGutlin Following "only" 130 people is often going to be pretty limiting in terms of seeing new original content, because most people don't post that much.
If you don't want to see replies or boosts in your timeline, just click the gear at the top and switch them off.
