Today Mastodon is taking another step towards its founding ideals: independence and non-profit ownership.

That's nice if you liked it here, but me and all the other people ending up on bluesky wanted exactly the same but didn't get it here.I use the star button like that too, but somehow almost nobody else does. When I check my feed, I see usually 0 stars, even for posts that have hundreds of reposts. For me this is just a gasping unused space.

Well okay for a reference: check the above Mastodon posts. 400+ reposts and 5 stars? I don't think this button is much used...
Also: I don't follow the right people? I think that's the problem. If I get a bad experience so easily on this platform, and it's my fault if I don't improve it, this will keep people from using it. I understand that active Mastodon users like this, that's why they're (still) here. But there are many more people who don't, and these are on bsky now.

@elexia @Mastodon
My point here is that most people prefer less chaotic feeds and a more accessible interface and bsky managed this well while still giving *You* control over what you see. Mastodon could've done that too which would've made it eternally better, but they didn't.Which seems to be fine for people who like to take the Mastodon deep dive, but terribly inconvenient for average Joe users like me.

@risottobias @philbetts @Mastodon This.
If there's ever a risk that you're going to become the next Matt, this is what you do to stop yourself.

@Mastodon Congratulations to the Mastodon team on this major milestone - a testament to the success of the project! Transitioning from individual ownership to shared governance is no simple task, and this sets an inspiring example for fostering a fairer, safer, and more collaborative digital future for everyone.

@Mastodon Thank you to Eugen and the entire Mastodon team for everything you’ve built and nurtured so far.
Grateful for all the hard work that’s brought us here, excited for what’s ahead!

@Mastodon It seems rare that American programmers do public service things like this. Makes me kind of ashamed. I guess the European system is different? That programmers can find themselves with the free time for large projects without getting kicked out of their homes for not paying the rent?

@DirkGutlin @Mastodon yeah idk mastodon UI and UX could definitely use some work, though it's also difficult to balance what people want out of it. not sure other fedi software do better with this.

@Mastodon I left twitter for this and have not looked back , bravo

@elexia @DirkGutlin @Mastodon I don't get this at all. I use both Tusky app or the Mastodon app and I don't find either confusing at all. I have a diverse feed, all the news I want and even public transport and weather info. I use the star button. It does do something. It makes the poster feel heard - which is the point no? Sometimes I wonder does it just make sense to a different type of brain. Where is this maze of text you complain about?

Well it is here on my feed, it's my Mastodon experience. Do You want to deny my experience? Do you suggest my brain is "not made" for Mastodon? Sorry, but this sounds like intense gatekeeping. I shared my experience, I get that it's not the experience of people who are happy here, but it's the experience of people who tried it here but moved to bsky. If Mastodon is not interested in those people, that's fine. Then ppl will go to bluesky.

@Mastodon
Please explain new Euro not-for-profit organization. Is this a trust that controls the mission?"We will continue day-to-day operations through the Mastodon GmbH for-profit entity, which will become wholly owned by the new European not-for-profit entity. The Mastodon GmbH entity automatically became a for-profit as a result of its charitable status being stripped away in Germany. The existing US-based non-profit entity, the 501(c)(3), will continue to function as a fundraising hub."

@DirkGutlin @elexia @Mastodon I'm not dismissing your experience at all. I just don't get it and I'd like to understand it as many of my friends won't join or stay active either. I asked for an image of the 'maze of text' you see.

@urbanfoxe
Well, I don't think I can capture it in one image. I think the weird thing is that my feed is usually overflowing with very few very active users, and I get EVERYTHING these few active users do, be it original posts or comments to comments to comments. I like more original posts and more diversity in the posts I see.In bsky, I have this neatly ordered due to feeds. If I want science, i get a science feed. If I want social, i check my friends feed. No suggestive algorithm. No chaos

@Mastodon 'My Paranoia'. One can easily follow what the Mar A Lago Criminal can and will do. And we've seen what the oligarchy did when faced with his actions. I want, very much, for Mastodon to succeed but too much freedom, despite its Management location in Europe, won't hold water if he decides to censor us in the U.S. I do hope that is a consideration that has been explored. Between AI and the right wing Media, even now, we face the hints of a 'People's Observer". Lies A Plenty!

@Mastodon superb leadership here going non-profit and transparent. We're planning something similar for @TeamTopologies ...
