I agree with this thread for the most part.

@bhawthorne @jerry great job. Nobody is making blanket statements. This is a big problem but not a universal one. I hope you find ways to participate beyond "this isn't a problem for me".

@panda I already had to modify dns records to add my own domain to my mastodon identity. Yes it would be a barrier for a lot of non-technical people. It doesn't apply to this particular feature because the user has already opted into dns config. It's perfectly reasonable to expect that I wouldn't mind taking a couple of additional steps. In this case, I'm being told no just on principle.

@bhawthorne I know that was a bit of a rebuke Brian. But I don't want you to respond by deleting. I was sincerely asking you to find more that's behind that. You could try to learn more out more about why your community seems to be working and share it with us.

@polotek I don’t have a problem with thoughtful rebukes. As described in the pinned post, my brain doesn’t work as well as it used to and I frequently find myself saying things that are less than helpful. If I have the spoons to look into this at some point, I’ll come back and share with you what I find out. But in the meantime, I’d rather not have incomplete stuff hanging out there. Which is why I am quick to delete when I realize the topic is really deserving of more thought than O can give it at the moment.

@bhawthorne that's understandable. Thank you for sharing. I hope things are going okay. I've been struggling with some things myself.

@polotek if you know anybody that wants to try running their own instance but doesn't want to undertake it exclusively on their own, I'm happy to help them get up & running

@polotek I’ll be retired in a week, and I hope that makes many things easier. Thanks for the kind response, and I hope your struggles are successful.

@bhawthorne I hope the retirement is a happy event for you! I know the feelings are sometimes complicated. But being able to retire is a great feat.
