Would anyone be interested in participating in a sort of retro gaming "book club" style group?
-
@mike I would sincerely love to do a strictly hobby podcast. No deadlines, no pressures, no extra polish, no marketing, etc.
-
@killyourfm This is a really cool idea.
-
@Radgryd The big hurdle is that organization is not my strength! If done right though, I think this could be an absolute blast. I'm wide open to ideas.
-
@killyourfm Sounds great! I'm trying to complete more games this year and revisit some classics I've missed, and this sounds like an ideal motivation. Please add me to your list
-
@killyourfm @chris retrohandhelds is doing it, but apparetly it is all on discord.

@killyourfm Sounds like a great and very fun idea! It would be great if people felt like recording their game play and/or thoughts and putting them on peertube. Maybe a playlist could be made.
Also could it be a bit dip in and out depending on availability and genre of game? I can't do first person shooters like Doom, but count me in for things like King's Quest and Space Quest.
Edit: woops, I just saw that you said console. I'm not sure if you're including PC games in that.
-
@jupitersigh Honestly, I'm wide open to PC games too! (Especially DOS, which I mostly skipped when I was a kid/teenager). I'd like to think the group will shape this, and not just me.
As for dropping in whenever you want, absolutely! Stay tuned. I'm keeping track of everyone replying to this thread.
-
@gsquirrel Done! This little club can probably also double as your "Project Backlog"
-
@killyourfm Iām in if someone can give me a tap on the shoulder when it starts.
-
@CleanDesign Consider it done!

Retro Game Club: ASSEMBLE!
The first think to figure out is where to chat while we get set up and organized.
Let's make this a group decision, OK? Cast your vote: -

@killyourfm @Jojonintendo @thanius @nausahaver @lyonsinbeta @baltmatrix @TeamLinux01 @chris @Btph @gsquirrel @CleanDesign @tylnesh @jsstaedtler for more "live" discussions, definitely matrix, signal is too much of a pain on the desktop (it works when it wants to, plus needs to be signed up for on a mobile app on ios or android with a phone number) and mastodon doesn't do well for threading group conversations

@raptor85 @killyourfm That sounds good for a live chat method (good point about accommodating mobile *and* desktop)
I look at #monsterdon as a possible template for Masto-based interaction. They do a simultaneous movie viewing every Sunday and it seems to work for them. They use the hashtag to keep everything together. ...Though I wonder if federation fragmentation is ever an issue (eg. your instance doesn't pull in all messages from other instances)

@raptor85 I'm definitely aligned with this. Matrix tended to be unreliable during my time at Mozilla, but I think it IS the best option, and I'm sure things have been improved.

I am on everything except Signal.

@jsstaedtler @raptor85 As if to validate your concern, here's the only thing that happens when I load up that hashtag...

Also, as a member of the Ubuntu Matrix Council,
It would be kinda funny for me to vote against Matrix -

@killyourfm Not sure how long ago that was but I've used it for a while, all my friends have moved over to it as well. (with a bit of prodding tbf), we even have the full voice calls/etc set up on our home server for gaming. It's basically just better discord without all the crap now.
I would never use it to replace a forum or something like masto of course but for chat imho it's the best there is at the moment.

@killyourfm @jsstaedtler funnily i can see someone else replied to this message but my server isn't receiving it so I can't see the reply.
Mastodon is great at a lot of things, making a coherant thread of replies everyone in a group can see is not one of them.
