The more gen AI tools get better at making photos or illustrations, the more I like the imperfections of my film-based photography practices. Like in my scans I have a speck of dust, or scratch, that I can trace back to a specific film negative and the time I scanned film when I was hangry and didn’t care to remove them.

Aesthetically ‘perfect’ visuals are so incredibly boring to me anyway. I don’t like a lot of the YouTube videos these days coz they all have the same Sony alpha video with lights and same color grading look that’s so boring

I’ve been kicking around the idea of making a zine of all the imperfect film things I’ve done. Like the time I put photoflo in my dev tank and got a very bubbly photo that looked very trippy. Or the time I heated my color chemicals too hot and then it looked like this dog had fire coming out of its mouth. Time to do that, maybe

@skinnylatte ooh, I would love to read that! I love the imperfections and kinks of analog films and mechanical cameras. My Olympus 35RD jammed once, unbeknown to me, resulting in this gorgeous chaos https://chaos.social/@janamarie/111846330055310949

@skinnylatte me I do mostly video, found this really interesting channel where this guy restores old camcorders - I have a lot of those where the tape mechanisms wore out long ago and he's come up with a nice solution which I'll implement on mine. I like the look of old video and apparently I can get it again with relative ease. Oh and, I'd read your zine!

@bangskij I have a friend who might give me a Borlex. Can’t wait to get into motion picture film. I even like developing it

@janamarie wow that is so cool!

@skinnylatte yes! This reminds me of instrumental music recordings were you can hear page turns and fingertip glides down strings between notes

Right after typing this, I realized I scanned a 2 rolls of film with the wrong settings and now it looks like I got super psychedelic photos. Actually kind of like it!
