Oh look, a stupid, expensive, mildly racist, trade policy just kicked in. Great. I guess "Windsor" and "Detroit" are celebrating today... or something... yay Capi-Duh-Lism.

@chris they seem to use ‘cars’ and ‘vehicles’ interchangeably. I wonder if it affects scooter/motorbikes/ebikes.
I have definitely seen an uptick of them in metrovan, which is great because overall fewer emissions, take up less space, safer for others etc
-
@leroy I don't *think* it applies to non-motorized (below the 'ebike limit) vehicles, but I'm not sure! There is a quiet revolution happening when it comes to e-powered small mobility devices! The growth has been amazing in our town!!

So, what major car manufacturing industry do you have in Canada that would require this kind of protection?
Detroit is in a different country, right?

@airwhale The Car industry is massive, in terms of its political impact, in Canada. Windsor, Ontario is right across the river from Detroit, Michigan and the two countries, plus Mexico, have a very integrated and inter-dependent supply chain.
As far as I'm concerned, they do not need, and should not get this "protection". It's pure politics and lobbying by US and Canadian companies and Unions.
-
Ah, thanks. I wasn’t aware of the supply chain implications. Guess that could be quite the industry.
Should have realised this ”made in the United States” message comes with a lot of asterisk

@airwhale Ya. There are a number of automative plants, 5 non-Canadian companies operate 9 car plants here and there are a bunch of Canadian companies, particularly bus companies New Flyer and Nova Bus (which has been an early-adopter of EVs).
There is a *huge* auto parts industry that supplies both Canada and USA/Mexico plants.
