"As Jim Covello’s car barreled up Highway 101 from San Jose to San Francisco ... he counted the billboards about artificial intelligence. The nearly 40 signs he passed … were fresh evidence, he thought, of an economic bubble. “'Not that long ago, they were all crypto.'"
Covello is the head of stock research at Goldman Sachs.
He says: “Overbuilding things the world doesn’t have use for, or is not ready for, typically ends badly.”

Old enough to remember Webvan. Hwy 101 has always been the best tech bubble barometer.

@mastodonmigration I'm old enough, too!
I rarely drive on 101 any more since i'm retired and I live much closer to 280. But yeah — the billboards sure tell a story.

@jeridansky @dangrsmind this blurb reminds me of a business / news / analysis idea I had years ago.
A site that tracks the billboards (and other outdoor advertising) along stretches like 101 and shows what is currently there as well as what has been there in the past & when it changes.
(See also Times Sq and other similar high traffic locations and stretches of road)
I think it is indeed an indicator of industry focus (and over hype) and often a sign (literally) of business futures
