those trees are massive. much larger than what we have available today, because it takes centuries for them to grow that big.
in this depiction of the process used to make a dugout canoe, the trees were being felled for production purposes, by people that knew they would needs lots of big trees.
the trees being used here are their normal production supplies, being taken from a carefully tended forest.
