Thinking of making a website that just tells you what to order if you’re at (1) a dimsum place (2) a Cantonese restaurant
-
Inspired by my friends who have collected my dimsum menus from our meals, and returned to dimsum restaurants on their own to order the same things
-
Maybe with audio as well in Cantonese and Mandarin since not everyone who works at a restaurant can read (especially if they’re older!)
-
(It’s ok to order the same things I order, because dimsum restaurants don’t exactly have new dishes all the time! There are just some classics no matter where you are)

@skinnylatte Being a celiac but loving all manner of Asian food, this would be interesting.

@skinnylatte
In my east coast dim sum experience, we rarely order, just keep getting served by the ladies going by with the carts… -
@RealGene oh, i like to order verbally with the cart ladies who will then yell at their friend with other cart to come over

@TheJen I would stick to the steamed rice items as they tend to be steamed individually
And avoid the fried things since they might still fry in the same oil as stuff with wheat
-
My mum once told me her oldest memory of existence is walking to a dimsum restaurant, bleary-eyed, in the 1960s.. she would walk 7km with her 5 siblings on the days their father got paid
So they could go to a dimsum restaurant full of dimsum carts!
This is why I am like this, probably (she’s about 5x more into food than me. Which is scary!)

@[email protected] I really miss the hong kong tea house, which used to be on pacific @ stockton. the building is still there but the restaurant is long gone. it was super busy in a way I never see dim sum restaurants get any more, there was always a wait to get in and there was a guy out front barking out numbers for people waiting for tables. and zillions of carts
-
@skinnylatte This is why I take photos of my receipts at all places I eat. I even have a specific app for it ️
-
@pratik receipts at dimsum places usually in Chinese characters only heh

@[email protected] fuck, that is a tragedy. what's possibly just as wild is that there used to be an almost equally as busy place almost across the street, asia garden, where we would go if the wait for hk tea house was too long

@pagrus recently brought an old Cantonese man to the structure that used to be Asia garden, he could not believe it was now a store instead of a restaurant
