Well they’ve finally done it — you can now follow Mastodon users from Threads (with some restrictions; see screenshot). Easiest way to test this is to search for your Threads account here, like the latest post, then check back on Threads. Follow your Mastodon self from there. Once this gets 100% functionality, I will hopefully be able to start pointing Threads users to my Mastodon profile.

@ricmac so, is Threads on the Fediverse now?

@ricmac You can just share this:

@evan Almost there They just need to enable replies…kinda crucial for a two-way web. But I’m certainly pleased they are moving forward again.

@ricmac It will be interesting to see how Threads ventures into the Fediverse. I have no Threads account, nor anticipate making one, so, I cannot really test things or see if, for example, my profile on my instance is accessible or not.
I wonder if Threads will ever really permit open, bi-directional federation with the Fediverse considering moderation concerns within a centralized platform such as their own. It could be that Meta only permits open federation with a few larger Mastodon instances and otherwise blocks out the wider Fediverse, either via purposeful intention or through ignorant naivety adopting Mastodon's
#fediblock
lists (either would deliver essentially the same end-result). @evan -

@adiz @ricmac No, they don't have allowlist federation. They have a blocklist which you can see here: https://www.threads.net/moderated_servers
Your account is not yet visible from Threads. If you follow @evanprodromou , then people there can find you (not just me). I think they aren't doing Webfinger search correctly, so people can't find you from Threads unless you start the process.

@ricmac I can't seem to get past: "Easiest way to test this is to search for your Threads account here."
Is there a threads account name format I need to adhere to on the Mastodon side?

I have a strong feeling there are already ‘invisible’ Threads accounts following us anyway.
I am surprised how often a random obscure remark of mine hear becomes a full blown interest group centered on that detail tossed into my Facebook feed. Happens constantly
