I'm curious, if you had to roughly estimate your donations to mutual aid requests over the past year, how much would this add up to?

@stefan I mostly give to organizations, but when I want to give cash to someone who needs it, all I have to do is reach in my pocket for the next person who says, "excuse me ma'am, do you..." as I'm walking into the grocery store. I don't think people should have to lay out all the details of their virtues and misfortunes on the internet. When I give cash to a random stranger, it's because they asked for it, not because they bared their soul to convince me that they are the Most Deserving.
@feznander Yeah, it's a lot, for sure. But it sounds like you're doing a great job!
The context for the poll was more about the availability and distribution of funds in the fediverse, just as an FYI.

@stefan roughly $300/mo on average I think... so around 3000+ annually. A large chunk of that is continual support of specific friends, but I pretty regularly give $20-$100 to mutual aid fundraising campaigns that cross my radar from people I don't know first-hand.

@earthshine Wow, you set a great example with your generosity!

@jandi Good question, I specifically meant the fediverse.
@stefan Oh dang I need to change my answer then

@stefan does a GoFundMe count?

@stefan The way I see it, I am fortunate enough that this money could make a bigger difference in the lives of other less fortunate people than it could in my own, so that is where it is needed to do the most good. I'm not wealthy, and even if I hoarded that money I still never would be... but I can get by, and I've been through hard times enough to know how important it is for other people who struggle to get by as well.

@kissane Ah, sorry!

@vmstan Sorry, I should have clarified that I was thinking about requests coming from the fediverse!

@earthshine That is a great attitude. You're bringing a lot of good into this world!

@stefan I just added up the past 6 months of my Venmo account and it extrapolates to around $2500/year. there's maybe 1/3rd again of that amount across PayPal/Kofi/etc
part of working in the tech sector is acknowledging how much power it gives you to improve the lives of others

@tully Very nice!

@stefan Sorry to mess up your sample! I wish there were a non-gatekeepy way to distinguish between direct aid (person needs money) and mutual aid orgs that spring up and serve communities in chronic and acute trouble. I support both but theyโre really different ways of operating.

@kissane No worries, this is on me, I should've explained myself clearer.
Two years in the fediverse, I don't think I've ever not mess up a poll in some way. Still learning!
