@[email protected] I've been buying stuff from kobo but mostly because I can strip the DRM and back it up and read the book from any device I want (also, their app isn't awful as far as readers go). I dunno about their business practices, though, but I figure anything is better than giving ol Jeffington more money : (

@[email protected] @[email protected] oh yeah! I forgot, but that's another reason I started using Kobo: I hear their readers are really nice. I don't have one and have instead been using my iPad (especially since I've been reading mostly manga lately) for it (basically, buying the book, then either reading it through the Kobo app or using Calibre to strip the DRM, then backing it up and adding it to either Apple's Books or... I forget some of the other apps available but it kind of depends on the format), but I've heard they're very good about not locking you in to their store and their color readers seem decently priced and nice.
I ended up reading The Gender of Mona Lisa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gender_of_Mona_Lisa from Kobo since the version from Apple was... fucked (they did something with the margins that ended up cutting off a lot of the actual content! Hopefully for anyone that wants to read it that way, they fix it in the upcoming tankōbon versions). -
@aud @zkat #Kobo used to be good for #eBooks , but then Rakutan bought them, tashed the UI, and got bought out by Walmart, who have restored most of the functionality. After Feedbooks got bought out, trashed their UI, including the #DRM search filter, Kobo was my goto source for ebooks as most of the other independents are gone.
Now that I've found https://www.ebooks.com, I hardly ever use Kobo. They have a #DRMFree landing page, but it's not well integrated, though _is_ URL hackable.

@[email protected] @[email protected] wait, so Kobo is owned by Rakutan (that I knew) but they're owned by WalMart? jesus

@aud @zkat it's not obvious until you go to the login screen and see the "Sign-in with Walmart" page...
Oh wait, I just checked and that is now hidden under "More sign-in options", right at the bottom! I was about to wonder if they realized that was freaking out users, but I had it wrong, Walmart is just a venture partner https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobo_Inc.#Venture_with_Walmart
I guess I have to invoke https://xkcd.com/386/ someone is wrong on the internet and it was me
