I have spent the last couple of evenings packing my childhood into cardboard boxes. I wish there was a place on Yelp I could review this experience. Zero stars, do not recommend

I came across this photo of me in what I guess was the 7th grade, looking very much like someone who would love to sit down with you sometime and talk through your life insurance options

I was a big hit with the girls, as you can probably imagine

Now I'm remembering the first time I found out a girl had a crush on me, which would only have been a year or so after the above photo was taken.
This was back in the days when every home had a big printed book filled with the phone numbers of everyone in town. (Yes kids, that actually used to be a thing. Can you imagine?)
So this poor girl would call my house, politely ask whomever picked up the phone if she could talk to me, and then when I took the phone and said "hello" she would panic and hang up

That was the start of what would become a recurring pattern in my life, namely only realizing a woman was interested in me long after it was possible to do anything about it

@jalefkowit This is so sweet.
I have the same memory, except I was the giggly girl. Many years later, I met my crush in a non-school setting and he was even cooler (unpossible) than he had been in 7th grade. We never dated because I would panic whenever we spoke. I was jinxed by the doxxing foolishness of the phone book

@fisherstudio I still remember how much courage I had to muster up the first time I asked a girl to go to the movies with me. Even though I knew through friends that she would be extremely receptive to the idea! It was still terrifying.
Adolescence is so hard. They should give you a medal when you come out the other side
