The comments on the above article also include the sentence “you really had to be there to experience how revolutionary Cool Ranch really was,” which I feel deserves some kind of award
-
@jalefkowit That's a low-key burn on the times. "You have no idea how bad things were -- I mean, *Cool* *Ranch* *Doritos* were considered revolutionary!"

You, a fool, absentmindedly toss a bag of chips into your cart from the sterilized shelf of a harshly lit supermarket. But I go into the wilderness to find the True Chip. Only I know the secret places in which it dwells. For I am Chingachgook of the Chip Country

@wordshaper @jalefkowit
In Amsterdam it's called Cool American because they have no concept of Ranch as a flavor -

@jalefkowit As a chip connoisseur myself, who enjoys the brands in question, I can assure absolutely no one was rapt with interest over these regional brands.

@ReverendMoose Yeah. I mean, my Ohio hometown has its own beloved local brand of chips. It just never occurred to me to make that a load-bearing element of my personality

@RnDanger
...but a cool American...?!

(way to go Jason, there’s nothing the TikTok kids like more than Fenimore Cooper references)

Obligatory:
“Conversations in the Cooper books have a curious sound in our modern ears. To believe that such talk really ever came out of people's mouths would be to believe that there was a time when time was of no value to a person who thought he had something to say; when it was the custom to spread a two-minute remark out to ten; when a man's mouth was a rolling-mill, and busied itself all day long in turning four-foot pigs of thought into thirty-foot bars of conversational railroad iron by attenuation.”

@jalefkowit they’re better than the average US potato chip, but the flavors seem to lean salt / vinegar / just acidic in general, so probably why it’s not for me. I love the crisps in the UK / Aus / NZ. Just potato and some savory flavor. Over here I live on Asian potato chips which have more agreeable flavors for me. Walkers sometimes if I can find them

@jalefkowit they’re not wrong.

@octothorpe I think we all remember where we were the day Cool Ranch dropped

@jalefkowit I generally don’t like to think about the BCR era. (Before Cool Ranch)
-
@jalefkowit I am this kind of snob. I thought I was a well-traveled snob with all of the weird flavors I have experienced in Asia, but a recent trip to Spain opened and entirely new chip window.
-
@jstogdill But have you been to… PENNSYLVANIA
-
@jalefkowit I *live* in Pennsylvania
