And as long as we're talking about weird aircraft carrier stories, in the '50s the British had the idea that the weight of carrier planes could be reduced significantly if they did not have to have landing gear, so they pioneered the development of a rubber carrier deck that wheel-less planes were supposed to belly-flop onto
