The first derivative of a function
f(x)
is frequently written asf'(x)
. Both of these have a basically canonical pronunciation in English ("f of x", "f prime of x").
Extending this notation, the second derivative can be writtenf''(x)
. How do you pronounce that verbally? (and, if applicable, how do you pronounce it mentally?)
If you've never seen this notation before, and you don't know how to pronounce it, please don't search for a correct answer. If you think a certain pronunciation is intuitive, but haven't heard it anywhere else, please do answer; I'd like to hear non-standard variations as long as they make sense. -
