apple I don’t care enough about ram latency to justify putting the ram on the chip itself instead of giving me slots I can use to upgrade it
-
the couple points in synthetic benchmarks was so worth making ram I can’t upgrade without buying a new fucking computer
-
@puppygirlhornypost2 I do hate this but to be fair having non soldered ram seems to be more and more often the outlier...
I think them soldering the storage is what is really insane lol, that and the fact that they acted like 8gb of ram was ok for so long -
@[email protected] the m1 CPUs are not soldered the ram is on the silicon chip

@[email protected] well the added performance were good, but the fact that you couldn't upgrade the RAM without buying a new computer is really what titled the balance in favor of doing that.
-
@[email protected] you cannot upgrade it at all even if you had the equipment to desolder the ram. it’s etched into the same piece of silicon that the cpu resides on.

@[email protected] @[email protected] thanks for being incredibly more coherent than I managed while doing the exact same jab at apple lol
-
@[email protected] it’s also shared with the graphics chip which you guess it is also on the same piece of silicon
-
@[email protected] @[email protected] but you can get like 25% of what you spent on your computer back by trading it in so it’s clearly worth it (I feel like 25% is too high actually I’d have to check the numbers)
-
@puppygirlhornypost2 I mean for graphics that is pretty standard no?
-
@[email protected] no? vram exists separately on my nvidia cards. It’s what’s surrounding the chip. Shared memory? Yes that’s standard to share host memory with your gpu (unless of course you’re on Linux where nvidia drivers do not have this functionality despite it being a highly requested feature for checks notes the past decade)
-
@[email protected] people had to design specific water cooling blocks for the rtx 3090 because it featured vram on both the front of the board and the back. The back didn’t have adequate cooling in air cooled systems yeah.
-
@puppygirlhornypost2 I mean if you have a dedicated gpu yeah, but like amd apus have graphics on the same chip and they use system memory as vram. And for anything that isn't a gaming laptop APUs are kinda the standard.
-
@[email protected] In apple’s case it’s a bit more than an apu since the chip is large and not the same size. It’s hard to really explain that but when I took apart a Mac mini bc I was curious… like it’s a decent couple square inches of space
-
@puppygirlhornypost2 ah ok, that is indeed a little peculiar lol
-
@[email protected] so like if your gpu fails, or anything else on that hunk of a chip you need a new computer there’s no replacing one component.
-
@puppygirlhornypost2 ITS LIKE FOUR TIMES THE SIZE OF A DESKTOP CHIP???
-
@[email protected] yes now u see.
