@[email protected] What should've existed instead then

@[email protected] judging from @[email protected]'s posts it'd be nice to have a sort of in-between with large scale instances being community spaces and actual autonomy. I mean, you think about email and I know never compare fedi to email but I didn't register a gmail account because I wanted to meet other gmail users. I wonder if there's a way (probably is in relation to groups/circles) to have the "community" part without the power dynamics of larger instances.

@[email protected] I mean, we have single user instances on this platform. It's really lonely there unless you built up people around you. One of those ways is by registering on a medium to larger instance and then reaching a point where you're comfortable and migrating off from there to your own thing... but what if it didn't have to be that way? you get what I'm saying? There's gotta be middle ground between the two where people feel like they are free to go where ever, use whatever software but won't face losing the people they like talking to, or struggle with meeting new people.

@puppygirlhornypost2 it is good that mastodon instances can come and go as social movements and identities do

@[email protected] @[email protected] It'd be nice if you could just start using fedi without using some kind of existing instance
Like requiring everyone to self host their instance or something but more convenient. Like you just install your client or something, and you start using it, it doesn't need to run 24/7, etc
I don't know if the thoughts I'm posting are coherent -
@[email protected] @[email protected] yeah the idea is to disconnect the sense of community people get out of these "nation state" like instances, and instead replace that with concepts such as groups/circles. hashtags are really uh not great on this network sometimes. It really shouldn't matter that much what instance you're on which is why I brought up gmail. I just, i registered a gmail account years ago because it seemed like the best. I didn't register it because I wanted to enter the gmail community and become a hardcore gmail enthusiast.
