Last week, I wrote a blog exploring how Bluesky could use cryptography to effectively satisfy two popular feature requests without changing their existing architecture.
The point of this blog post isn't actually Bluesky. It wasn't even suggesting that cryptography was the correct strategy to solve these problems.
The point was to demonstrate what is possible with just a little creativity.
(Too much creativity, and you're likely inventing algorithms that require a lot of extra testing to be confident about.)

I was anticipating there would be a lot of interest in this topic from technical folks, but also from new, non-techie users surprised by the lack of this feature.
I used the minimum amount of furry art for such a discussion.
Ironically, this post didn't take off anywhere. Nobody was interested in this post.
Even r/crypto, which is a fantastic community, had floated around the 50% upvote, 0 points line since I submitted it there. (This is in spite of the only comment on the thread being a supportive one.)
Hacker News just auto-killed the post. I'm not sure if my account is shadowbanned, or if my blog's domain is.
And what makes it funny is that, for the past 4+ years, I've had techbros screeching in my comments section about the furry art in my blog posts.
The one time I keep it to a minimum when sharing something technically interesting? Crickets!
It's so goddamn funny.

Comment threads: "We want less furry art."
Me: "Here's something mildly novel, with minimal furry art."
Comment threads: "You don't exist to me."

It's difficult to explain why this is so hilarious to me.
But I will say that this outcome is not a surprising one.
People who clutch pearls don't have a free hand to feel another's pulse.

Hacker News: "We don't care about race, gender, sexuality, or any of that. Meritocracy, baby!"
Me: exists
Hacker News: "No, not like that."

I inquired with the Hacker News moderator about whether their spam-fighting system has become "allergic" to anything mentioning Bluesky (as was suspected by some people).
Turns out: No, the automation just hates whenever I submit links to my own blog posts. It triggers some blog-spam prevention mechanism.
