what is it with chess world champions and making their own variants

@[email protected] I mean, jokes aside: At least for Fischer random the argument seems valid to me. The game is less fun if everything is just theory.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Personally I'm a fan of Arimaa-style opening: On the first move, the first player arranges all their pieces however they want in the first two rows, then the second player arranges their pieces however they want.
The advantages are:
a)No luck,
b)There are too many openings for opening theory to be practical,
c)The second player gets the advantage of arranging their pieces in response to the first player, which helps balance out the first-move advantage.
I could also see limiting each player to choosing from among the FRC/Chess960 positions to make it "feel more like chess."

Also, Kasparov did invent a chess variant: Centaur chess.
