Let me get this straight: it wasn't about the price of eggs after all?

@MotherEarth Magical, cultic thinking. The folks who should really be ashamed are the media, who know better but love to use this meme of Democrats ignoring "real Americans" election after election as a cudgel to beat up the Democrats.

@Eetschrijver @GottaLaff Thank you — a good quote to apply to this situation, for sure.

@wdlindsy Yes, and LBJ was also correct with his assessment of white men...and it is still true today

@Piousunyn I suppose much depends on what the term "minority" means. It might mean people who are historically disempowered even when they constitute a numerical majority, I would think. Reading that statement to which you're responding, I'm not inclined to quibble about the term "minority."

Most welcome. I'm afraid several Orwell quotes apply or will apply shortly.

Raised in Kentucky is that my point of view: Basically, nothing has changed in the population since the 1960s. There were racists and sexists and the religious fanatics have remained. I'm glad I didn't stay there.

@Eetschrijver @GottaLaff O suspect you're exactly right about that.

@wdlindsy It's that "economic anxiety" at work again.

peachfrontreplied to William Lindsey :toad: on last edited by
if they cared about the economy they'd never vote for a GOP
they cry "economy" because they realize it's uncool to be racist
that's it
there's nothing deeper involved

Yes indeed. There is only one human race and it is dark-skinned. All those who are not dark-skinned suffer a pigmentation deficiency of varying degrees, the extreme being albinos. Sadly, early humans in Africa, being primitive at the time, purged their sickly, lightly-coloured and white brothers and sisters by driving them out of their ancestral home continent. -

@nelsonstreetlad @Christo_459 Genetic theories of racial superiority based on pigmentation leave me cold, in part, because they're absolute nonsense, and in larger part, because they've proven lethal and toxic time and again. And lots of trolling on social media is right-wing trolling disguised as woke trolling.

@Sagittarius_Galaxie Yes, I think this is true of a large swathe of the American public, unfortunately. Tom Schaller and Paul Waldman's book on white rural rage is eye-opening in this regard.

Yes, there are problems with the economy. But I have always maintained that "the economy" as an answer to "what concerns voters most" is bullshit.
"The economy" is what stupid people on the street and stupid people in news media say when they have no fucking idea what's going on but they think it makes them sound smart.
It's like one of those old jokes about phrases you throw out at parties when you don't know what people are talking about.

@wdlindsy @Sagittarius_Galaxie Living in rural very white America, I see that education is not valued as a pathway to advancement, and that was true thirty-five years ago when I first moved here, although the tuition crisis has solidified that position.

@slotrak @Sagittarius_Galaxie Yes — so much so. I say this as someone born in the educationally impoverished state of Arkansas, who lives there still. Very good commentary on this challenge is to be found in Monica Potts' book The Forgotten Girls.
