"The Trump campaign knew that men were his ticket back to power, and it targeted them—pointedly young men, and men of color—with a sophisticated campaign of grievance and disinformation.

@wdlindsy I guess we now have a companion to "Some are more equal than others."
The meritocracy should rule. But, of course, men should be assumed to have more merit than women.
-
@i_gvf That's the logic of it — so-called.
-
@HeliosPi I agree: misogyny definitely is the core of this current wave of fascism. Well-noted.

Blame should also fall on parents. You don't become voting age without parental influence, whether that's indoctrination or abdication. Parents need to be involved, teach their kids to be decent, and be active in their hobbies (including their viewing habits). Hate is taught, and if you want to stop it, you have to be engaged in their lives to steer them away from it -
@bhcompy Yes, I very much agree.

@wdlindsy Thankyou. Here's two relevant essays about misogyny in fascism, how the "manosphere" on the internet, from Gamergate in 2014 on, led many to fascist politics, and a need for a recognition of women in anti-fascism as a rejection of manly saviour complexes.

@mastodonmigration You're right, a must-read article to which I keep returning. I just finished her novel The Family Tree and thought it was first-rate. In some ways, it's a slog through the misogynistic culture of the last several decades, which she sees with a clear eye.

Naomi Beinart, who's 16, describes what it was like to go to school the day after the election, as her female classmates were covered in a "blanket of despair" and the boys in her class sat playing Minecraft on their computers.
She writes,

"We girls woke up to a country that would rather elect a man found liable for sexual abuse than a woman. Where the kind of man my mother instructs me to cross the street to avoid will be addressed as Mr. President. Where the body I haven’t fully grown into may no longer be under my control. The boys, it seemed to me, just woke up on a Wednesday."

@wdlindsy This author’s experience was very consistent with the reactions I observed among the teens in my life.

@wdlindsy the worst part of the "manosphere" ecosystem, is the social media which fuels it (like YouTube) seems to have algorithms smart enough mostly *not* to promote it to older men (Gen X and above) who are left leaning, even if your preferences are for "blokes" interests (like cars, electronics), so its easy not to notice how much it is being promoted (especially if you don't have sons of your own, or hang around gyms and such places)

@wdlindsy @Nonya_Bidniss My daughter (15) said what she fears most is that she now has to live in a world where many men her age think emulating Trump is what they are supposed to do, and there is no expectation of consequences.

@wdlindsy here in Britain I find the younger folk are totally divided; they are either 100% "woke" or consider Reform UK (which is more popular with seniors) to be "not hard right enough", this was reflected in the post-election riots, where a *lot* of men from the skilled trades seemed to be involved (to the point I consider there is a risk from stochastic terrorism, especially attacks on CNI (critical national infrastructure) in the medium term)

@wdlindsy 16 year-old boys were little shits in my day.
Now they are mindless zombies with 15s attention spans needing constant stimulation.
Only two years before they let them vote.
-
@wdlindsy I hate to ask this, but how many eligible women voters didn't vote?
It was really freaking important.

Exactly! When trump brought up the size of a dead golfer’s penis, the men in the audience laughed, but it was the laugh of a shared belief in the superiority of having a penis (the bigger the better).
He sent the same message by fellating his microphone—I’m the candidate with a penis.
And trump’s seeming meanderings on wanting to protect women reinforced that only a man can protect the nation & a woman cannot—she needs a man’s protection whether or not she wants it. -

Hi!
Thanks for the share. Could anyone give me the full article please? Since I'm not a subscriber, I can't access the full text but I'd love to show to my French students.
I'd be forever grateful -
@wdlindsy For the entire country to wake up to the fact that a majority of the country elected a convicted serial rapist and more than likely Pedophile to the highest position of power in the world tells us something about ourselves as a society. 60% white males and 53% white females chose this option. Read my last crime fiction piece titled Circus Freak Nation out on Amazon to find out reasons why
