Republicans want to run away from the ugly rhetoric about Puerto Ricans as "garbage" at Madison Square Garden by claiming this was not a racist statement since Puerto Rico is not a race.
Noah Berlatsky responds:
"Race isn’t a biological reality, but it’s a handy way to perpetuate injustice. And, crucially, because race isn’t real it can perpetuate injustice against anyone you define as a racial other. Which can be anyone."

Yes, You Can Be Racist Against Puerto Ricans
Race isn’t real, so racism can be directed at any group.

@wdlindsy If there's one thing the GOP response to January 6 has taught me, it's that they can do damage control for anything, no matter how vile, given enough time and repetition.
But that doesn't help them this close to the election. I'm sure they'll have their talking points straight in the next couple days, but there's no time for their noise to bury the signal between now and Tuesday.

@wdlindsy Republicans view Puerto Rico as a colony to be exploited. They would run there in the winter and bask in the sun at the US-owned resort hotels where everyone speaks English, funneling the money back to the mainland, but couldn’t care less about the population that lives beyond the hotel fence, as long as their toilets get cleaned every day.
They rarely venture into the beautiful countryside and mountains to enjoy the people, food, culture that this island has to offer. -

@bouriquet That's right. An attitude deeply rooted in colonialism.

@Thad I hope you're right about the time frame and their inability to drum up a faux controversy, as they're trying to do right now with Biden's remarks about Puerto Rico and Trump's followers.
