As the United States hovers at the edge of fascism, the history of Germany can help.

@wdlindsy I wonder if pointing these voters towards Evangelicals for Harris would provide them with the permission structure they need to vote differently than their local churches instruct them to. https://www.evangelicalsforharris.com/

@feisty_lemming It might affect a very few, but, honestly, not many, in my view. I say this as someone raised in the Southern Baptist church in the very evangelical (and right-wing) culture of the American South, who has two first cousins who are Southern Baptist ministers. I know my people. They are not pliable or willing to be informed or reconsider their long list of bad choices from defending slavery to welcoming Jim Crow to combating desegregation and women's and LGBTQ rights.

@Sofijania Well, there's all that — and there's a nice piece of waterlogged swampland in Florida I'd like to sell you if you're interested. P.S. The plural is not formed by slapping an 's on the end of a single noun.

@CassandraVert So well-stated and well-noted.

@lolonurse I do, too. I keep in mind how they nattered on about the big red wave coming in 2020, and it never arrived.

@lolonurse I will keep doing all I can in my own little way to fight — and am happy to know others are fighting alongside me.

@KathleenC I very much agree. Thank you for making these points so clearly.

@beingreal I very much hope you're right about that.

@jwcph I think it's one thing to say that making these points won't turn GOP voters towards any light, and another to say that it's "too late" to make these points. I think they have to be made over and over and I'm grateful to Timothy Snyder for doing so when the media have been mealy-mouthed about all of this.

@DRBLD2009 Not sure if you're responding to that statement by Jess Piper or something else.

@tantramar @fsinn Touché — wonderful skewering of that tired, mendacious mainstream media meme of "economic anxiety" as the heart of the Trump voter's universe.

@SherBeareth I say the same every time I read something he says that's worth considering.

@JustRosy Thank you for that valuable reminder. Brings to mind George Takei's painful accounts along with a dramatic telling of his family's interment at Rohwer camp in Arkansas. That was such a shameful period in American history, one of many such shameful episodes.

@wdlindsy Thank YOU for the reminder! I knew I forgot to include something! He's the whole reason I first found out about it! It wasn't in my childhood history books at all. Lemme go fix that!
