"CBS announced over the weekend that moderators Margaret Brennan and Norah O’Donnell will not correct any lies when vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and JD Vance meet in New York to debate on Tuesday night."

@wdlindsy CBS already told us where they stood. Trump is good for CBS.

@dan613 @wdlindsy #CBS: the network of Walter Cronkite. Eric Severeid. #60Minutes. The network that helped bring down #JoeMcCarthy. Fred Friendly basically negotiated broadcast standards with the #FCC in the ‘50s.
How very far they’ve fallen. Cronkite must be spinning in his grave. Shame. Shame. -

Uh, isn't that every day already? -

@neverbeaten So the headlines should be everyday.

@SonofaGeorge Yes, I think of that outstanding history, how my family looked forward to watching Walter Cronkite (and Dan Rather and Roger Mudd on CBS) as I was growing up.
And now this. Talk about how the mighty choose to fall.

@dan613 Yes, thanks for that salient reminder.

@SearingTruth Amen.

@mral You're right. And he puts us all in a bind as he lies, bloviates, and makes toxic, dangerous statements. If we pay attention to them and discuss them, then we're feeding into his strategy to suck all the air out of the room and make himself the only visible person in the room. But we can't afford to ignore them, either, given how much rides on them.

@cherold You're right. This is part of a long game to cow media and force it to frame its stories in a right-wing context that pleases Republicans — or, otherwise, it will be Katy bar the door for media.

@aka_quant_noir Whether we focus on fear or anger — and they aren't mutually exclusive, surely — I think our main focus should be, with Mark Jacobs, on "the New York Times’ ability to laugh it off shows how it is failing to live up to its duty as a major news organization in a democracy."

@DoesntExist Great final line.

@JeanPoole_AZ Thanks for that information and the link. This is a lick and a promise, as far as I'm concerned — and it represents an abdication of real journalistic responsibility to challenge lies.

@JustRosy Sorry, but I'm unclear what you're responding to in the thread to which you've responded.
-
@wdlindsy yes and hence the challenge. I face it too.
It would be better is the #bigCorp #media and the rest of us tried to follow a strategy of saying twice or three times as much about VP Harris as about the former president in each report. ie bookend all reporting of the lies.
I hope #Walz simple says "folks that's a lie, I have staff that will explain it, let me tell you about facts"; make it a mantra or a drinking game, take a drink every time he has to say it:-)
-
@mral Those are good points. I'll see if I can manage myself to do better at balancing what I share here with good material about VP Harris.

@wdlindsy The link you posted of the article from Dan Rather. If you click on my comment (or just above the body of it, in a blank area), it should open up the thread where you posted that link.

William Lindsey :toad:replied to JustRosy last edited by
@JustRosy I see the link, and thanks for clarifying. I just don't see anything in what Dan Rather says which indicates that the two men engaging in the debate are more worried about what they look like than anything else.

@wdlindsy Oh! I was referring to Trump/Vance. Sorry, I should have clarified.

William Lindsey :toad:replied to JustRosy last edited by
@JustRosy I'm sorry I didn't see your point. Since the thread focused largely on Walz-Vance, that's the duo I thought you meant.

@wdlindsy That's totally understandable! I should have clarified! Thank you for asking me what I meant
