"Due to the wide variation in laws and protections surrounding transgender individuals across the United States, roughly half of all states have enacted extreme anti-trans legislation, including bans on gender-affirming care. Meanwhile, the other half have passed no such laws, with many even expanding protections for transgender people and their healthcare."

"This disparity allows researchers to treat the differing outcomes as a 'natural experiment,' providing direct evidence that anti-trans bans cause harm in a way that few previous studies could achieve… evidence that The Trevor Project was collecting along the way."

We are in the middle of a death cult.

@wdlindsy Parable to banning a specific hair color, and banning the ability to change hair color, making many of those people with that hair color feeling worthless and exiled.
Banning a group of people from living a full life is terrifying to me.
A friend of mine is significantly depressed and I'm angry at those lawmakers being so bigoted. -

@melanie So it seems to me. And the sign over the door reads, Pro-Life.

@GreenRoc "Banning a group of people from living a full life is terrifying to me."
Well-stated. And the Republican party is now out in the open about its plans to do just that very thing to women and LGBTQ people, not to mention immigrants, if it gains sufficient power.

The lies run deep. I was raised in this kind of community. So much careful denial of meanness. -

@melanie I had a Southern Baptist upbringing, and can relate to the damage some upbringings do when it comes to think about these matters. "So much careful denial of meanness" is such a good phrase: when you're the best people in the world and have The Truth on your side, you have to protect yourself against recognizing how mean that can make you, or you'd begin to question it all.

That's right. I'm dealing with family on that side this week. It chills me how terrible they are. I was raised Church of Christ in Missouri. They all want it to be the 1840's.
I have to believe they're going to lose eventually. But they are responsible for unimaginable suffering and I definitely wish them ill.

@wdlindsy for many Republicans, this is an argument in favour of bans

@hutchingsmusic Yes, for many Republicans, up is typically down and fact is normally fiction.

@melanie "They all want it to be the 1840s" is such a good — and sad — line. My former sister-in-law was a devout member of the Church of Christ who graduated from their exceedingly right-wing university in Arkansas. Like you, I have to believe the right-wing evangelical movement trying to run the whole show for all of us will lose eventually, but as you say, the suffering in the meantime is gross.

"A study published yesterday in Nature has confirmed that state-level anti-transgender laws are causing significant harm to transgender and non-binary (TGNB) young people. The study, titled 'State-level anti-transgender laws increase past-year suicide attempts among transgender and non-binary young people in the USA,' provides empirical evidence that these laws are not just political statements—they're life-threatening policies."
~ Parker Molloy
The Data is In: Anti-Trans Legislation is Hurting Kids
New research shows a dramatic increase in suicide attempts among trans and non-binary youth in states with anti-transgender laws, proving the devastating impact of these harmful policies.
