When I was growing up, I heard lots of talk about Hitler. "How could anyone have listened to that madman rant and have believed what he said?" people would ask, shaking their heads sadly.

@wdlindsy Yes. To think it could never be us is to miss the point entirely.

@SoGeneris Precisely. And I'm astonished that when the parallel is so clear, many still want to quibble and miss the point with endless discussions of when fascism is "really" fascism, and whether it's Hitler or Mussolini or neither that Trump is like, and so on. Missing the point entirely….

@66gardeners And, yet, in my experience, they almost never have any shame at all about their atrocious decision — and I suspect the same was true of the vast majority of those who supported Hitler in Germany.

@Dave_Goldsmith Well-stated. Exactly so.

@teacher_rick Thank you. Still so, so stupid sums it up very well. The siren call of xenophobia and racism, the need to consider oneself better than a targeted minority community, the need to scapegoat: these remain so stubbornly strong in so many people.

@haiku_shelf @DP0 @CatDragon Certainly some Catholics resisted, and courageously. I think of Austrian lay martyr Franz Jäggerstätter. But that's far from the whole picture. Strongly Catholic areas of Bavaria voted resoundingly for Hitler. My husband's cousins in an almost totally Catholic village in Baden tell him many villagers there today descend from fellow Catholics who gleefully took part in the events of Kristallnacht, burning the synagogue, then sending Jewish citizens to be murdered.

@xs4me2 Well-stated. Very good analysis. And, indeed, who would have thought it can return so soon? The blacklash after the election of the first African-American president in the U.S. — so strong and, for many, so unexpected.

Adding slightly to this thought - we are facing problems and have developed tools and methods that can no longer be addressed by the childish way we have previously done.Things like just releasing products, tools, or methods on society and then fixing the damage afterwards will not do anymore. Things need to be tested and evaluated BEFORE release, because the stakes have grown too big. Facebook, for example, should never have been allowed without an adult evaluation of risk

My grandfather (1890 - 1982) voted for Zentrum (Catholic Party). And then...... no votes for Zentrum were counted anymore... He had voted but as result there were 0 votes...
My husband's grandfather was several times in Gestapo prison because he criticized the dictator in public several times and died short after the war (and there is evidence that there is a connection between his time in prison and his health).

#WeHaveTheChanceToNotReelectHitlerFor years ago at a YMCA, I said those words in conversation to someone I was talking to. I was reported to management and when it was time to renew for the month, they would not let me renew until I was counseled.
I haven't been back since and won't unless trump loses. I love their pool in the winter.

@haiku_shelf @DP0 @CatDragon I know that there were some Catholics who courageously resisted Hitler. I also know that there were many others who did not. Franz Jäggerstätter's parish priest and bishop both told him it was his duty to join Hitler's army. Austrian prelates stood by the roadside giving Nazi salutes as German tanks rolled into Austria. The treatment of the Nazis by the Vatican, from the highest levels, remains a source of serious scandal today.

@66gardeners @CatDragon It's wonderful that you said those words at the YMCA pool and horrifying that someone would report you and YMCA would tell you that you needed counseling. Free speech, much? I don't blame you for not returning.
