"What’s been really striking this year is that while traditionally deep distrust of the mainstream press has long been the province of right-wing Republicans, now it’s liberals who once cheered for the media to do better who seem to be giving up on them."

@mergy Thank you very much for this link. I had not read this article and look forward to doing so. I did read a report in New York Times today that was, in my view, shallower than shallow.

@bhawthorne @mastodonmigration Yes, that definitely plays a key role in what's happening.

@astroPug Thanks for your positive feedback. When I click on the username of the person to whim I responded, his account is showing up as still open and active. Maybe some instances have suspended it?

That might be the case. My instance has been pretty good to me, I have to say. There is a lot of bad stuff I don’t have to see.

@grumble209 Some people see new coats of paint, others see something entirely different.
Some people troll. Others don't.

@DoesntExist A great name for it.

@edwardchampion Yes, I agree. Very good analysis. I've heard the claim repeatedly in my longish life (I'm 74) that men and boys are under attack, and always at the bottom of that claim is hostility to women's rights and the emergence of women as autonomous persons on the world stage at this time in history. It's high time that happened, but the resistance — from men — is fierce.

@apples_and_pears This explanation from historian Diarmaid MacCulloch is one of the best overviews I've read about why male hostility to shifting social patterns that call male dominance and entitlement (aka patriarchy) into question is surging is one of the best I've read.

@jawarajabbi Yes, he and his toxic version of masculinity exert a lot of influence, for sure.

@rvinson The sad thing is, though these divisions are exploited and made deeper by power actors, they're really there and really need to be addressed.

@AmbularD Perhaps not. But I think there are some ways in which what's happening with the corporate media is definitely new and unprecedented, and has much to do with the development of the internet and social media.

@mastodonmigration @CptSuperlative Yes — a great point. To me, the word "ethics" does loom large here. It's an ethical issue when hordes of almost exclusively young journalists surround an aging and embattlled president and scream questions at him about his age and health, while never doing the same to his political opponent. This raises serious questions about the ethical values of said journalists and about who raised them to have such values.

@astroPug So much about how this federated system works is mysterious to me. I keep trying to educate myself, but have much to learn.

@wdlindsy Nobody in MN believed that crap. Walz beat the #Republican by almost 8 points two years ago.

@wdlindsy Thank you for your kind words. And, yes, male tenacity is especially troubling, particularly when one can be equally tenacious about willing to adjust and progress. I wonder if someone has done a study about how this patriarchal intransigence is formed by learned behavior at schools. Not just other student, but all the little rituals and remaining boomer teacher cadences. What if every high school dance was Sadie Hawkins, eh?
