"Certainly, the attacks on Walz reveal the ugliness at the heart of the GOP. But they also reveal the extent of stigma against neurodivergent people, and some of the dynamics of how that stigma functions."

"We all have a little bit of Gus Walz in us. I’m proud to be on the right side of history. I’ll always stand up for what’s right and the things I was taught as a small child about being kind and respecting all people, regardless of our differences."

@wdlindsy It was sad that, for his safety, Gus Walz wasn't able to attend the final night of the convention with his parents.
When kids are on the fence about their own behavior, watching adults, who are supposed to be leaders and examples of good, act out and bully a child, even a teenager, tells those kids it's okay to jump to the side of the fence that bullies others.

I totally agree with the Noah Betlatsky quote. I also agree totally with the article. -

It's interesting to me that I just took a self-test for autism and (if it's to be trusted) I appear to be right on the edge of the spectrum. A score 13 or higher means you're likely on the spectrum; I scored exactly 13. Some described behaviors sound familiar to me, some do not, and some some used to be familiar but I don't do them anymore.
But I definitely used to experience bullying in school until I figured out how to nip it in the bud. That was not much fun.

@tstrike78 I hate to hear you were bullied. I experienced bullying in school, too, because I didn't fit gender stereotypes for a macho male. So I understand and empathize.

@AutisticMumTo3 I thought it was a great article, too. Very glad he makes these points.

@PattyHanson Excellent points. I very much agree.

Sounds like we had similar experiences. I think I wasn't projecting enough masculinity to keep the jackals at bay until I figured out how to make it stop. So I got in a few fights, knocked a few guys on their asses, and learned how to respond to the bullies with some aggression of my own to make them think twice. These days it rarely happens, and on the rare occasion someone tries I know how to push back early so it doesn't get very far. I mostly just try to be kind to people.

There was an informative article about Gus Walz' NVLD

@wdlindsy
One of the "funny" things about Gus' condition is that is has nothing to do with intelligence (in fact, NVLD people tend to have higher IQs!)- it's a spatial-visual glitch that causes physical clumsiness, seemingly due to altered proprioception. So the haters better shut the F up, because he's about to be a new hero. -

@wdlindsy What blows my mind about this is Trump also has a neurodivergent son, most people have a friend or relative who is neurodivergent or disabled. It should be ugly for everyone, unquestionably. Every person should speak out against how cruel this is.
-
@wdlindsy Perhaps. But the GOP is trapped in a cult of toxic masculinity and they would have gone after a neurotypical son who was overcome by the emotion of the moment in the same way (or even deny that boys and men who express emotions other than anger can be considered typical).
-
@not2b Perhaps. I suspect there is a special level of vituperation at work here and that Noah Berlatsky is right when he says that has everything to do with Gus Walz's neurodivergence.

@RickiTarr "It should be ugly for everyone, unquestionably." The thing is, I think the vast majority of MAGA do not know that Trump has a neurodivergent son.

@lolonurse Yes, you're right. And think of how the very same set of folks mocked and still mock Biden mercilessly because he deals with a stutter. Adam Sewer really hit the nail on the head when he said that for the Maga movement, cruelty is the point.

@tstrike78 I'm glad you were able eventually to rise out of all of that, as I was, too, just by growing up. Like you, a lesson it taught me is the importance of trying to be kind to everyone and especially those being knocked down and overlooked. I also learned that bullies are essentially empty people and when you stand up to them, they back down.
