"See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated successful people who happened to be Black. …
Who’s gonna tell [Donald Trump] the job he is currently seeking might just be one of those Black jobs?”

"The greatest moment in [Barack Obama's] speech wasn’t a quotable line but rather an exquisite and petty dick joke he unsubtly made with his hands to mock Trump’s obsession with crowd 'sizes.' …
I'm glad the Obamas finally let loose. The first Black family that ascended to the White House had to bite their tongue for nearly 16 years as the GOP and Donald Trump unleashed racist and Islamophobic dog whistles against them."

"Michelle Obama reclaimed the role of family—especially mothers—in creating a just and civil society that cares for everyone, not only family members. Her positive vision of the family contrasted with the GOP’s vision that belittles and insults anyone who is not in a traditional marriage with young children (and still of childbearing age able to conceive without medical intervention)."

"By lucky coincidence, the day before the Democratic National Convention opened was the 104th birthday of the 19th Amendment. This milestone in equal rights, the culmination of a half century struggle by brave, often ridiculed and reviled American women to get the vote, was barely noted in the political discourse until Heather Cox Richardson posted late on that day one of her lovely pieces of American history."

"We’ve seen what Donald Trump really is, and it disgusts me to my core.”

Wajahat Ali talks to Sam Van Kopp, co-founder of Republican Veterans Against Trump, who is seeking "to reach out to fellow life-long Republicans to vote against a twice-impeached vulgarian who has repeatedly denigrated and mocked veterans and soldiers, referring to those who were wounded as 'suckers' and 'osers.”'

As Donald Trump continues insulting our veterans & taking a sledgehammer to our democracy, a group of Republican voters are stepping up to convince their community to finally defeat him this November.

"I'm a lifelong Republican, but I feel more at home here than in today's Republican Party. The Grand Old Party has been kidnapped by extremists and devolved into a cult. The cult of Donald Trump. Trump doesn't know the first thing about public service!"

And, as many of us celebrate what appear to us to be promising and remarkable things happening with the Democratic party, things that point to a brighter future for us all, the mainstream media remain ever ready to pop the balloon in any way possible.
As Judd Legum notes, one current strategy is to employ fact-checking in a hair-splitting way that gives cover to Trump's toxic lies, while attacking Democrats.

Why do the media insist on behaving this way (see /15)? Brian Beutler's explanation:
Mainstream media fact checkers actually often mangle facts to give cover to Donald Trump, as they "embrace pedantry, fallacious logic, and outright misinformation to insulate Trump from accurate Democratic attacks."
They do this because they WANT to give Trump cover. And we can expect endless media slams against the DNC for that very reason.

Yet more journalists embrace pedantry, fallacious logic, and outright misinformation to insulate Trump from accurate Democratic attacks.

@wdlindsy I'm happy to accept whatever allies we have in this race.
But I won't accept the message that Trump is an aberration and doesn't represent the GOP of the last 60 years.
Folks like Giles can pretend there's not a straight line from Nixon to Reagan to Bush to Trump; whatever helps them sleep at night. But I won't.

@Thad I won't accept that distortion, either — and I don't hear any Democrats calling on us to do so. At the same time, I think we shoot ourselves in the foot if we don't find ways to welcome these "errant" brothers and sisters without raking them over the coals for the part they've played in bringing Trump to us. We all, after all, make mistakes and need others to accept us warts and all at many points in our lives.
