I wouldn't be surprised if, on balance, cleaning up after Generative AI produced more cost than using Generative AI ever saved. Unfortunately, probably not for the same people.

@festal I almost felt bad for Wikipedia, until I got to the part where it emphasizes that this project is NOT meant to restrict the use of AI in any way.
-
@donnodubus @festal agreed. Wikipedia needs a complete ban on AI content to maintain its reputation
-
@Peternimmo @donnodubus @festal It does ban _sources_ that are generated with AI, and any content on Wikipedia needs to be verifiable. So I would argue that it is already banned in essence, this cleanup act is not really different from removing regular spam, except it is a bit harder to detect.

@Peternimmo @donnodubus @festal to me, this merely emphasizes the need for open access science: if we accept it as normal that your sources are paywalled, then how can we easily verify the claims? it should be trivial to verify in seconds. Now we do trust the AI sources because they give a trustworthy impression. (I mean here: a completely false title to a non-existing article, not an AI generated source article)
