The thing about negotiations is that one side can't obstruct a deal.

The Kahanist faction in the Netanyahu cabinet is threatening to withdraw from the coalition and collapse the government if any ceasefire is signed.

Kahanists believe that Gaza and the West Bank should be annexed, remaining Palestinians should be given second-class citizenship, and any that refuse should be expelled or killed.
Their main party, Kach, is illegal in Israel and was on the US State Department list of terrorist organizations until 2021. The members in the cabinet are part of successor parties. Same philosophy, different organizations.

Usually, war crimes are non-negotiable. You don't get to set conditions on when you're going to stop war criming.
-
@evan It couldn't be any clearer:
#netanyahu is absolutely hellbent on the complete and total #annihilation of #palestine and the rest of the world is allowing him to do this. This is an abject #failure on #humanity.

It's long past time for the international community to ensure the safety and basic human rights of Israelis and Palestinians in the region.
This ceasefire process has been going on for more than 9 months. This cannot be the only plan.

@Matt_Noyes absolutely.

That said, negotiations are essential to the crime in hostage-taking. Hostages act as human shields, yes, but they are primarily used as bargaining chips.

@peteorrall
"Failure on humanity" where 'humanity' is defined as the uk, canada and, esp. the usa
I'm a citizen of two of those
The rest of the world recognizes the evil.
@evan -
@gemlog @peteorrall what is the rest of the world doing to stop it?
-
@evan
Not going up against the largest military in the world that dwarfs them all you mean?
Well, nadda!
But canada rabidly endorses the usa and israel doing it, so even worse in my mind.
@peteorrall -
@gemlog @peteorrall well, there are definitely several that are withdrawing ambassadors and severing trade ties. Recognizing the State of Palestine. Joining the ICJ case by South Africa against Israel. I think there are countries taking a stand where they can.
