@chris I sy "to the edge" because if he resigns, the party will want to have a leadership convention and that takes time.

@jfmezei unless of course other parties in parliament smell blood in the water regardless of the Liberals wanting to have a Leadership Convention! :+)

I have doubts about that. None of the parties - except for some mysterious reason the UCP/CPC - have full warchests. The #cons have a slush pile despite 2 losses and 2 wins - one of those losses on home turf, one win was by a whisker, and the narrow loss in BC the on-book spending was 3-1.
None of the other parties want to give the cons any advantage, since a 3-1 on book really means more like 12-1. I expect they want to give Trump time to get his bonfire going.

@chris One guess: Justin wants to wait till after Jan 20th so he can demonstrate his power to fix the Trump problem with the 25% tariffs. (assuming he has what it takes to take on the bully). Freeland's resignation hinted at govt cost to combat those tariffs (so if they block export of car parts, compensate car part manufacturers for instance, same with oil or electricity).

@chris
Political theatre. There is no party in either government of opposition that is coming close to acting as though they have the welfare of the nation or its citizens at the centre of what passes for their thinking. Freeland is likely frustrated at the low-grade initiatives to stave off a con comeback, and, I suspect, wants eventually to sit in the first violin chair, but I suspect that her credibility is pretty much drained at this point. Jugmeet is working well at stuff that would have been quite adequate in the fifties or sixties, but won't come close to buffering the buffeting that's clearly in the cards. The Greens are neither coherent nor numerous enough to make much of a difference, and PP has his paving crew ready to reinforce the road to hell. The ugly truth is that we are all being stymied by an ownership group most apparent in the direction of Ms. Smith and the Alberta Tar Babies, a group working actively to keep the lid on Business As Usual under whatever label. -

@chris @jfmezei A lot depends on the NDP. It is possible, contrary to another post I made, the NDP will feel calling an immediate election could cause the Liberals to completely collapse to the NDP’s gain. I doubt they think they could win an election on that but they could be vaulted official opposition and work from there.

@chris Trudeau resigning does not trigger an election. Those are two distinct outcomes. PP wants an election. Jagmeet does not. It’s like watching like sports!

@jdw you are correct of course, but I think if Trudeau leaves before the New Year an early election is inevitable. JMO tho!
